Chokers! Chokers! Chokers!
It all started with the tattoo choker, then the velvet chokers and now, the statement chokers, which I talked about in my previous post here. Apparently, any thick bold embellished choker is taking the spotlight, as many designers showcased a lot of them in the last major fashion week. The prices are obviously higher than the regular chokers, ranging from $15 and up. But guess what?
I decided to take it my way and save me some $15 which I could use for something else. Yes! It’s all about creativity. So here we go…follow these steps and you are one step closer from slaying with your new DIY chokers…
Here are the items you will need.
- A tape-measure
- Any piece of fabric you choose to go for depending on what you have. I chose leather, denim and a gold piece, all from my ‘never wear’ pile in my closet.
- A pair of scissors
- Hot glue gun.(Any other strong holding glue would work just fine) I use hot glue guns for most of my DIYs just because it is by far the best quick drying glue. You can get it here on amazon and the glue sticks to match it here still on amazon. ( Both for $9)
- Some studs. (Totally optional) Find them here on studs and spikes ($4)
- Velcro. Again from Amazon ($3)
If you are in Kenya, (yes i did some research for you too) you can get some fabric and the velcro from Memsaab Clothing store in Corner Plaza, Parklands.
An alternative fabric glue can be found from The Woman Shop at The Sarit Center in Nairobi.
Also, if any of you knows where cone studs can be purchased at in Kenya, please comment down below to help a fabketeer out 🙂
Total cost for required materials (velcro) = $3 (NB: prices are subject to change on amazon)
LET’S GET STARTED!!
Have your neck measurements ready.
In the demo, I will be using my own measurements which are: Neck circumference= between 12 and 13. So to be on the safe side, I will be working with 14 to give myself room for errors. (I will be working with the term ‘markings’ just so we are on the same page because tape measures are marked differently.)
So if your neck measures 12 inches, work with an inch extra which will be 13 inches to allow room for any mistakes.
GENERAL STEPS FOR ALL THE CHOKERS
- Lay your fabric down on a flat surface to prep for the next steps. i.e take off lint, straighten it.. etc
- Use your neck measurement to cut along the piece of fabric.
- Clean up the edges for a neater look
- Attach the rough velcro right side in
- Attach the softer velcro left side out
1. THE GOLD CHOKER.
As you saw on the previous post, thick bold chokers are so in at the moment which inspired me so much to come up with my own. I actually scraped off the gold piece from the front of one of my old hats. LOL. So you can use anything you have.
This choker does nothing but to add a sophisticated touch to any look, especially when paired with anything off-the shoulders.
That’s literally it! all you have to do is repeat steps 1-5 for any other choker you want to create. Let’s try a different one…
2. THE STUDDED CHOKER
With this choker, I went for a hardcore edgy look because I needed it in my wardrobe and I figured it was going to be unique since i haven’t seen any choker like this in the stores. This one took a lot more time just because I used a faux leather fabric and stuck in some studs which is totally optional. If you end up liking the plain leather one…Well and good. Whatever makes you happy.
PS. Steps 12-16 are totally optional.
You get the concept now? Just play around with different fabrics, patterns, styles, etc…No matter what you do, I bet it will still be stylish!
On to the next one…
3.THE KIM K INSPIRED DENIM CHOKER
So, about a few weeks back Kim K (as we all know the Kardashians as the trendsetters), was seen wearing this all black outfit and accessorized with a denim choker which we haven’t seen in stores yet. It was after she had it on then stores started selling them for a minimum tag price of$15. I figured this is a really easy DIY of just cutting off a pair of jeans that you never wear and cuffing it to you neck. If this is where creativity is leading us so be it 🙂
VOILA! Go ahead and be a ‘Kim K’ of your own.
Also, if you loved her $1000 outfit on that look I’ll show you how to get the same look for only $80 next week so definitely stay tuned for that!
