Why don’t we start this year by ditching all the ashy foundations that make us look 7 times lighter and the extreme dark foundations that make us look like we catching that extra tan all year round!…
Girl! I know you feel me on this one.
I rebuke all the unblended foundations, the ashy foundations, the too dark foundations; any foundation that doesn’t match its skin tone, in 2017.
By finding the perfect foundation for you, you have to know 3 things:
Your skin tone
Your skin type
(Funny story time…more of like embarrassing )
I remember back in the day when I was still so confused about makeup but still try to pull it off like I’m poppin’…Oh boy! So I walk in to this makeup counter and you know, I ask the assistant to help me pick out the right shade that matches my skin tone because to me, all the foundations could do the job…LOL. So I’m sitting down waiting for a few swatches. Out of nowhere, the lady covers half of my face with a foundation shade that she believed matched my skin. “Wow that looks so perfect on you” She explained so joyfully and I’m over there hyped that yaaay I am finally going to look pretty and all. Girl! I go back to school (It’s the winter time btw) all that my friends could notice is how much darker I was. Who tans in the winter time though. That ‘perfect’ foundation turned to be a contouring shade instead. I looked 9 times darker than the rest of my body and that was not cute at all!!!!
So today, *cheers* to this post because it’s actually going to save you from looking atrocious like I did with my unmatched foundation.
Here are my 3 simple tricks:
Try out the Sephora color IQ technology
I don’t know what kind of juju this little device posses but it does an accurate job!! With just a few pictures taken, mainly around your jawline, this device can get the right tone of your skin and will list out all the possible foundation matches available and perfect for your skin tone! Also, if not sure which foundation to choose from, do ask for a few samples so you can test them all out first.
DIY using the undertone technique
Main question is, do you have a warm, neutral or cool undertone?
Looking at the inner part of your wrist where you see the color of your veins, you can easily map out your undertone! You are probably like “What’s the difference between skin tone and undertone?”
Undertone- The underlying color of your skin. These colors can range from warm, neutral and cool.
Skintone- The overall color of your skin.
WARM: You have a warm undertone if your veins are more on the greener side. Gold jewelry also flatters you more than silver.
NEUTRAL: Veins are blue-green (teal)
COOL: Veins are more purple. Silver jewelry also complements your skin better than gold.
Knowing your undertone makes it easier to find the perfect foundation because most brands label them based on undertone references.
Do a jawline swatch
Once you are sure of your undertone and let’s say you are trying to swatch and try out different shades of foundations, swatch them along your jawline for the most accurate match.
You ever seen people wearing foundation that looks a different color from their neck? Exactly. Now you know…that ain’t cute at all! That’s what we are trying to avoid here. Our face skin tone can vary on different areas especially if you are darker skinned tone. We dark women tend to be lighter around the nose area but darker on the outer areas. So by swatching the foundation along your jawline down to the neck, it is easier to make a decision. Choose the foundation that becomes invisible on both the jaw area and the neck area.
Alongside from choosing the right shade of foundation, choose the foundation that matches your skin type.
Oily skin– Choose an oil free foundation or simply a matte one, which will cancel out any more shine.
Dry skin– Go for a hydrating foundation to give you that healthy glow.
Acne prone skin – Acne is caused by excessive oils; so choose an oil free foundation and one with a heavy coverage to conceal all the blemishes skin without having to apply many layers.
